CrossFit is constantly varied, functional movements performed at a high intensity. CrossFit is a method designed to mimic a human’s natural movements through exercise. Our lives are based on movements that happen all day long; whether it is picking up your child, getting in and out of your car or helping a friend move. These are called “functional movements.” CrossFit is influenced by these movements and has set up a system to maximize the potential of our physical capacities as human beings. The programming of CrossFit is based on gymnastics, weightlifting and mono-structural movements. You will become stronger in all of these areas therefore making your potential to move your own body weight or external objects that much greater. Regardless of age, experience and fitness level, any individual can participate in CrossFit because the workouts are scaled to a person’s individual abilities.
A former gymnast Greg Glassman founded CrossFit®, Inc. in 2000. He found that the best way to achieve optimal fitness was not through specialization but rather through “constantly varied, functional movement, performed at high intensity.” In short, this means combining elements of Olympic weightlifting, gymnastics, sprinting, rowing and core conditioning to improve overall flexibility, strength, speed, endurance and agility.
CONSTANTLY VARIED — Always changing the workouts, never letting your body adapt.
HIGH INTENSITY — Power/intensity is how much weight you can move over the longest distance in the shortest amount of time, while maintaining proper form and technique.
FUNCTIONAL MOVEMENTS — Movements that we use in everyday life such as squatting, dead lifting, pulling yourself up, etc. These are movements that promote neurological and hormonal responses, leading to better health, actual strength, actual core stability, agility, and flexibility. CrossFit can be scaled to any body, any age, and any level of fitness. It’s fun, its safe, and best of all it gets results.
